Making the Invisible Visible is Not as Easy as it Seems
A Swiss-German artist of endless inventiveness, Paul Klee absorbed the lessons of the major art movements of the early Twentieth Century. Experimenting with ways to balance the abstract and the real, he sought to reveal spiritual truths. For Klee, process was more important than final form, and each work an attempt to recreate the world anew.
PIECES OF KLEE dramatizes in scenes, movement, and dance Paul Klee’s journey to become the artist and person he worked his entire life to become. The play introduces the audience to some of those who accompanied him on this journey, his parents, his wife, Lily, his son Felix, the sculptor Herman Haller, and the painter August Macke.
Learning the violin as a child, Klee studied drawing in turn of the century Munich. He served in the army during WW I and taught at the Bauhaus School in Weimar. In the 1930’s, he suffered censure by the National Socialist Party before going back to his birthplace of Berne, Switzerland where he lived out his remaining years. His quietly stubborn and witty defiance of the rise of fascism only enhanced his determination to make the most of the time he had left to create.
This production is collaboration between On the Spot Theatre Company, and its associated ensemble, Dancing on the Spot (DOTS). Emma Brayndick, Artistic Director of DOTS, developed the movement pieces in a workshop process and is co-directing this production. Improvisational dance is used to help tell the story and express the vitality, humor, and pathos of the life and art of Paul Klee.
